Dalai Lama says that "if any Tibetan culture alive in this world is in upper Mustang of Nepal ".

Of course, Mustang valley is reach of Tibetan culture and landscape. In the ancient period it was a salt trading route between Tibetan and India. Lower Mustang's Thakali people were the best merchant at that time.

This valley was disconnected from main stream of the country before 1947. When Dalai Lama left Tibet, some of his supporter enter in this valley and try to capture the territory for some years, after that Nepal government keeps high interest here for the security matter. Also upper Mustang was considered a separate kingdom inside Nepal and king Jigme was representing of this cultural value even politically it was not.

Mustang was only opened to the trekkers in 1991. The department of immigration issues only a small number of permits to protect local traditions from outside influence as well as protect the environment. Recently government of Nepal reduces the fees of the trekkers to encourage the trekkers more in this region.
